ABOUT

"I often create intense and disquieting imagery to unravel stories. I work instinctively, adopting the Neo-Expressionists' perspective by discarding intellectualised and refined approaches to art and returning to the expression of my raw emotions."

In the realm where art transcends boundaries and speaks the language of the soul, Tamara Bekier's work emerges as a poignant testament to resilience and the human experience. Bekier's artwork is based on dreamscapes that are suspended in time and reflect two parallel worlds that weave together the echoes of her past and present. Born in Russia in 1931, her childhood unfolded amidst the chaos of World War II. At the tender age of 12, she embarked on a harrowing odyssey with her mother across war-torn Europe, confronting unimaginable hardships along the way. From enduring the horrors of medical experiments to braving the biting cold and gnawing hunger, Bekier's experiences have become the source of her artistic expression, giving voice to emotions too profound for mere words.

Her identity, a tapestry intricately woven from labels - Russian, Volksdeutsche, displaced person, migrant, Australian - mirrors the complexity of her existence. In Bekier's art, one finds these threads of identity intertwined with the very fabric of her creations, as elements of her past, present, and innermost thoughts converge to form the essence of her artistic narrative.

Inspiration flows from the depths of memory, intertwining tales of fear, endurance, and unexpected kindness with the newfound joys of life in Ballarat. Through her paintings, Bekier bears witness to resilience, hope, and the indomitable spirit of humanity, narrating stories of migrant aspirations, the strength of women, and the silent resilience of those burdened by unspoken pain. Silent figures inhabit surreal landscapes within Bekier's art, mirroring the hidden anguish they carry within. As Albert Einstein once remarked: "A bundle of belongings isn't the only thing a refugee brings to his new country." Indeed, Bekier's journey has bestowed upon her a unique perspective, infusing her art with profound depth and meaning.

Acknowledged by Art Gallery of Ballarat director, Louise Tegart, as "exciting work by an important artist" and acclaimed by Tim Costello AO for its moving and inspiring beauty, Bekier's art stands as a testament to the power of creativity to transcend adversity.

As the circle of her life draws to a close, each artwork and medium becomes a canvas for exploration. Through her creations, Bekier channels memories of displacement, the plight of women, and the human spirit's extraordinary resilience. For her, the creative process is more than mere artistry; it is a sanctuary where challenges are met and emotional wounds are healed.

Welcome to Tamara Bekier's world, where every stroke of the brush bears witness to the enduring human spirit, inviting you to explore, contemplate, and immerse yourself in the stories woven into each artwork.
